Le Tiers Programme, Manifesta 13’s Education & Mediation programme  presented two projects to the public during the biennial: the Invisible Archives and GROUP-THINK.

The Invisible Archives started before the opening of the biennial, in December 2019, and inhabited the Tiers QG in sequence of eight exhibitions and public programmes until October 2020. Selected archives of local civil initiatives were used as departure points for artists who together with the associations created the exhibitions. Discover all the Invisible Archives here, as well as the dedicated website here.

The GROUP-THINK project was developed by Danish artist Stine Marie Jacobsen with schools in Marseille. The project, that started in September 2019 resulted in a film screened in a cabin on the rooftop of Coco Velten during the biennial and into a handbook distributed to local schools and for sale online.

It is with great sadness that we have to inform you that due to the new national French COVID-19 regulations announced yesterday by President Emmanuel Macron, as of Friday 30th of October all museums, galleries, etc. in Marseille will have to close. The regulations stay in place for a minimum of four weeks.

In consultation with the Mayor of Marseille Michèle Rubirola, the Ministry of Culture, the Prefecture, and the Conseil Départemental des Bouches-du-Rhône, we have decided this means the 13th edition of Manifesta will effectively be closed.

Within the next days, Manifesta 13 will announce how visitors can still experience the biennial’s exhibitions through a digital format. Should certain projects that are part of the parallel programme Les Parallèles du Sud reopen after the national lockdown, Manifesta 13’s team will be sure to inform you.

We are incredibly grateful and thankful to all our partners, participants, curators, collaborators, team and board members for all their hard work and dedication, resulting in the biennial still having been open to the public from the 28th of August until the 29th of October 2020.

We welcome everyone to enjoy all Manifesta 13 Traits d’uinon.s venues for free today before the lockdown begins.

We look forward to seeing you at the Consigne Sanitaire, Citerne des moulins, Conservatoire de Marseille Pierre Barbizet, Musée Cantini, Musée d’Histoire de Marseille, Musée D’histoire Naturelle Marseille, Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Marseille, Centre De La Vieille Charité.

Video by Mars Production in collaboration with the City of Marseille.

The eighth and last exhibition of the Invisible Archives, La subtile mémoire des humains du rivage opens specially tonight before the closure of Tiers QG due to the new sanitary measures.

For this Invisible Archive filmmaker Olivier Derousseau was invited to present his work on the archives of Film flamme-Polygone étoilé, an artists and filmmakers collective that created the Polygone Etoilé in La Joliette.

We invite you to the Tiers QG from 17.00 until 20.30 and to register to the presentation of “La Chaine Cinématographique Sensible”, tools and gesture, by Jean-François Neplaz, Raphaëlle Paupert-Borne and Olivier Derousseau, and the screening of 16mm Cinépantomimes, shot in Belsunce in 2002-2003 at 17.00 (registration here) and 19.00 (registration here)

See you tonight!

Le Grand Puzzle, the pre-biennial urban study by MVRDV and The Why Factory led by Winy Maas and commissioned by Manifesta 13 Marseille offers a captivating portrait of Marseille that highlights its beauty, needs, contrasts and potential. The study looks at the city through three different lenses: interviews, urban maps and proposals. Thus, it serves as a tool for its citizens to rethink the potential of their city.

This past weekend Manifesta 13 opened three Traits d’union.s new venues part of the new plot The Park: Musée D’histoire Naturelle Marseille, Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Marseille and at Consigne Sanitaire at the Vieux Port, the latter opening specially on this occasion.

The director of Manifesta 13 Marseille is happy to announce that the biennial with all its institutional, educational and public programmes as well as Les Parallèles du Sud has attracted more than 20.000 individual visitors, since its first gradual opening moment a month ago today.

Despite the fact that due to the pandemic the opening conditions are not as foreseen, we are extremely thankful for the very loyal and generous support of our partners both from the City of Marseille, its museums, cultural institutions, artists, collaborators and visitors.

Stay tuned for the next and final opening on the 9th of October! All plots will be revealed and exhibitions of Traits d’union.s will be on display until the end of the biennial on the 29th of November 2020.

The central programme Traits d’union.s presented the exhibitions The Home, The Almshouse, The Refuge, The Port, The Park, The School in six Marseille museums and other unexpected venues in the city, such as the Citerne des Moulins in the most ancient neighbourhood of the city le Panier, the Consigne Sanitaire in the Vieux Port, or the Conservatoire Pierre Barbizet.

It brought together the work of more than 40 international and French artists, with a majority of works commissioned on this occasion.

Gradually opening from the 28th of August to the 9th of October 2020, these exhibitions were combined with a free Public Programme, including outdoor listening sessions at the Parc Longchamp in collaboration with Radio Grenouille, film screenings at Vidéodrome 2 and encounters throughout Marseille.

Manifesta 13 Marseille was launched on the weekend of the 28th to the 30th of August 2020.

To open the biennial during Covid-19 was a big challenge. Limited capacity and sanitary measures respected, we made it! To all supporters who made the beginning of Manifesta 13 possible, this was a huge collective effort for which we are extremely grateful!

We would like to thank our audiences for attending our first Opening weekend: you were in Marseille with more than 1000 visitors to discover the first series of Manifesta 13 programmes: exhibitions, concerts and performances of Manifesta 13’s Les Paralleles du Sud, Le Tiers Programme and the first plot of Trait’s – d’union.s, The Home.

Thank you to all our worldwide partners, members of the press and professionals who have been attending our online press conference (with over 500 viewers) and Le Grand Puzzle online panel discussion.

Find out more about the agenda for the weeks to come.

We hope to welcome you back for the second opening weekend on the 11th, 12th and 13th of September, 2020.

Manifesta 13 Marseille begins! Don’t miss the opening of 25 projects from its colateral programme Les Parallèles du Sud on the 28th, 29th, and 30th of August 2020. This programme aims to highlight the richness of the local artistic and cultural scene while creating sustainable and fruitful collaborations.

Come and discover installations that question our relationship to transportation such as Scenes of the world by Johann Arens, or an infrastructure that contributes to a positive rethinking of living together at Coco Velten or again, Persévérance at the Bassin du J4, a creative reworking of a curious boat from the end of the 18th century in which you can stroll with the artists!

Exhibitions, performances, workshops, meetings, screenings…. Discover the details of the programme day by day!

Join Le Grand Puzzle online panel discussion on Saturday the 29th of August at 11.00 with Mayor of Marseille, Mrs Michèle Rubirola and Dutch architect Winy Maas, who will speak about possible scenario’s for the future of the city of Marseille, based on the publication of Le Grand Puzzle, the urban study commissioned by Manifesta 13.

Le Grand Puzzle is the urban research by MVRDV and The Why Factory led by Winy Maas commissioned by Manifesta 13 Marseille. It was commissioned as the foundational step of Manifesta 13 Marseille and as new model of creative mediation that serves both as a blueprint for Marseille to plan its future and as a research framework to ensure that Manifesta 13 achieved a long-term impact for the city and its citizens. In Le Grand Puzzle, Marseille is addressed as a complex mosaic of fragments and sometimes lost identities unfolding from centuries of exchange between civilisations, where the city’s material archaeology, cultural legacy, histories and ecosystems testify to Marseille multiculturalism and syncretism.

For this occasion the the Mayor of Marseille Michèle Rubirola; the City Councillor of Culture, Jean Marc Copolla; Architect, Co-founder of MVRDV and Director of The Why Factory (Delft University of Technology) Winy Maas; Research and Education Coordinator of the Why Factory Javier Arpa Fernández, Manifesta’s Founding Director Hedwig Fijen as well as city makers Tarik Gezhali and Joke Quintens will come together to discuss the notion and value of an urban study for the future agenda of the city of Marseille.

Since December 2019, the Tiers QG, headquarters of Le Tiers Programme hosts the Invisible Archives, a cycle of exhibitions and events focusing on genealogies of civil initiatives, stories of resilience and citizen synergies born in different districts of Marseille. For the 4th exhibition, the artist Sara Sadik delved into the history of the association M.A.D.E in Bassens and explored its archives. She looks at Cité Bassens’ past but also its present through the stories and actions of its inhabitants.

After public life had been reduced as much as is possible, the time has come to slowly and carefully come together again. As of the beginning of June, Manifesta 13 Marseille will reopen for interpersonal activities to fulfil the need for dialogue, culture and social protection.

More than ever, everyone is impacted by this historical moment. Manifesta 13 Marseille believes that everyone should be able to imagine the future otherwise and supports a democracy where citizens are at the helm to steer political decisions. Le Tour de Tous les Possibles is a project central to Manifesta 13 Marseille. It is a series of 22 workshops with more than 500 inhabitants of Marseille, that aims to enable citizens to collectively imagine futures for their city. The project started in January 2020, continued online during the 2019-20 Pandemic and will now reopen. Each workshop brings together inhabitants of Marseille from different backgrounds, neighbourhoods, ages and genders. Many ideas have already arisen out of the 13 workshops (six physical, seven online) that have already taken place. Some of these ideas were utopian, others more practical but all offered innovative solutions to the numerous challenges, social, economic and ecological, that Marseille is facing today.

In order to gain a more in-depth understanding of citizen assemblies, we want to share a video recording of a discussion that took place in the Amsterdam-based Pakhuis de Zwijger. In the conversation, Eva Rovers, who is a member of Extinction Rebellion and author of among others Practivism (2018), and cultural historian David van Reybrouck discuss the importance of deliberative citizen assemblies, especially in these times of ongoing crises. Van Reybrouck is the author of among others A Plea for Populism (2008), Congo: The Epic History of a People (2010), and Against Elections: The Case for Democracy (2016). Van Reybrouck observes something strange about the present state of democracy: everyone seems to long for it, but no one believes in it. In this LIVECAST Rovers and Reybrouck discuss the potential of climate citizens assemblies. Best to start the video from the 27th minute onwards.

Manifesta is happy to announce that from the 28th of August until 29th of November 2020 Manifesta 13 Marseille will start to gradually open its three programmes: its central exhibition Traits d’union.s; its education and mediation programme Le Tiers Programme and the parallel programme Les Parallèles du Sud. There will moments with different intensity at different speeds, articulating different underlying thoughts and dreams.

  •  The story of Manifesta 13 Marseille is that of a passage, or as the title of the exhibition suggests of Traits d’union.s, hyphens, between one world and the next. All plots of the exhibition will unfold successively across Marseille, including in six city museums.

  • At the end of August 2020, Le Tiers Programme will open the sixth exhibition in Belsunce of the Invisible Archives at its headquarters Tiers QG. Delve into the world of the Invisible Archives.

  • Projects from Les Parallèles du Sud will be launched in collaboration with a large variety of local, regional and international actors across the region, starting at the end of August. Selected projects here.

Manifesta is working on a new ticketing policy to give everyone the opportunity to discover the entire programme over the three months of the biennial. Those who have already requested and paid for a professional accreditation to the preview days or have purchased tickets will be contacted by the Manifesta team shortly for a reimbursement.

Tiers QG has reopened its doors on the 12th of June with Invisible Archives # 4 exhibition. Espace Manifesta 13 will be open to the public fromthe 17th of June.

Ranging from videos with participants to podcasts with team members and listening sessions with Radio Grenouille, Manifesta 13 Marseille offers many ways to (re)discover Manifesta 13’s diverse programmes digitally and get a glimpse behind the scenes.

SOUND COLLABORATIONS WITH RADIO GRENOUILLE

As part of Traits d’union.s’ public programme, Manifesta 13 Marseille developed a Sound Programme enabling sonic experimentation. Manifesta 13 gave Radio Grenouille-Euphonia a carte blanche to design a support and distribution programme for artists working with or learning about sound. It encompasses two sound creation residencies, six listening sessions and a Sound Gallery on Radio Grenouille. Listen to the Listening Sessions (in French) recorded live from Park Longchamps and the Conservatoire or within the Radio Grenouille’s studio.

Radio Grenouille also developed Traits d’union.s; a series of conversations between personalities from the world of art, culture, business as well as civil society, in which a diverse range of individuals debate the major questions raised in the biennial.

Listen to the Traits d’union.s (in French):

Finally, a part of Manifesta 13’s collateral programme, Les Parallèles du Sud, Radio Grenouille-Euphonia developed another projects called Sonographies Marseillaises, in which artists, scientists, inhabitants and studies tell stories about Marseille.

Created by Marseille based Joke Quintens and Tarik Ghezali, in collaboration with Ouishare and Marseille Solutions, Le Tour de Tous les Possibles is a project central to Manifesta 13 Marseille. It is a series of 22 workshops with more than 500 inhabitants of Marseille, that aims to enable citizens to collectively imagine futures for their city. The project started in January 2020 and continues currently online.

Each workshop brings together inhabitants of Marseille from different backgrounds, neighbourhoods, ages and genders. Several ideas already arose out of the five workshops that have already taken place. Some of these ideas were utopian, others more practical but all offered innovative solutions to the numerous challenges, social, economic and ecological, that Marseille is facing today.

Taking key themes of the pre-biennial urban study Le Grand Puzzle as a starting point, the initiators of Le Tour de Tous les Possibles have imagined this project as to attempt to answer to the lack of representativity and participation in policy decision-making that some of Marseille’s citizens perceive.

The objective of the project, on the longer term, is to stimulate citizen participation for the creation of an “Assemblée de Tous les Possibles”, a permanent citizen convention of 101 inhabitants of Marseille drawn by lottery and representative of the population. This citizens’ assembly would propose and invent solutions to the challenges of Marseille, in close collaboration with the City Council.

In the current difficult context, where exchanges and social ties must be strengthened more than ever, the workshops are taking place online for the coming weeks, always with the desire to continue to imagine the city of tomorrow. They bring together 10 participants and two coordinators, as well as an artist who reports the ideas visually.

The first two online workshops took place the 16th and 20th of April.
Next workshop on the 23rd of April with Lab Pôle Emploi (the French employment service): register here
Workshop on the 29th of April with Synergy Family, a social and education strat-up and  Entrepreneurs dans la Ville, a network of entrepreurs: register here

Manifesta 13 Marseille is gradually opening its three programmes from the 28th of August until 29th of November 2020.

Manifesta 13 is divided into three connected programmes in Marseille and its region. The biennial’s central exhibition Traits d’union.s, conceived by the Artistic Team of Manifesta 13 Marseille; Katerina Chuchalina chief-curator of the VAC Foundation in Moscow & Venice, Stefan Kalmár director of the ICA in London and Alya Sebti, director of ifa gallery in Berlin, is accompanied by two analogue programmes: Le Tiers Programme, the education and mediation programme and Les Parallèles du Sud, the collateral programme.

Consisting of various plots and multiple storylines, the central exhibition of Manifesta 13 takes place across most of Marseille’s major museums, inviting the visitors to explore emblematic places of Marseille’s heritage including unexpected venues that open specially for the biennial. Six of Marseille’s museums, the Conservatoire National à Rayonnement Régional, the Consigne Sanitaire, the citerne des Moulins and other satellite venues gradually open from the 28th of August and house Traits d’union.s’ exhibitions thus actively building “traits d’union.s” between seemingly specific local narratives and those happening elsewhere in the world. Through deep and critical engagements with the conditions of change, Traits d’union.s adds new voices to the often competing narratives existing within Marseille.

Le Tiers Programme presents the result of almost two years of research in Marseille, among which is the project Invisible Archives: a monthly exhibition programme that connects Marseille-based associations with local and international artists running from December 2019 to December 2020.

Lastly, Manifesta’s collateral projects and events, Les Parallèles du Sud highlights the plethora of rich and diverse cultural initiatives in Marseille and its region, whilst at the same time showcasing international creative participants. Local cultural institutions, galleries and artists are co-curating and co-producing projects with international partners, connecting their concepts with Traits d’union.s. 85 projects are presented across Marseille and the region.

Through its three analogue programmes: Traits d’union.s, Le Tiers Programme and Les Parallèles du Sud, and its extensive pre-biennial activities, starting with the urban research Le Grand Puzzle and a series of citizen’s workshops entitled Le Tour de Tous les Possibles
Manifesta shows a strong ambition to adapt its format to each host city through the creation of an experimental biennial model.

Group-think is a project developed by Danish artist Stine Marie Jacobsen within Tiers programme. It is an innovative sports and civic education project. Developed in partnership with the national circus centre Archaos, it is a series of exercises that aims to stimulate the collective intelligence of students. The project was tested during pilot phases in October and November 2019 in five high schools and secondary schools in Marseille, and workshops of an adapted versions have been put in place in February 2020 with students from two elementary schools (Maurice Korsec school and the Rose Garde school).

A textbook co-written with students is about to be published. It will be used as a tool to share the methodology proposed in the academic training plan of teachers of the Aix-Marseille Academy in March 2020. It will then be shared to the national education and beyond during and after Manifesta 13 Marseille.

Tour de Tous les Possibles, a project designed by Joke Quintens and Tarik Ghezali in collaboration with Ouishare and Marseille Solutions, started end of January 2020.

Part of the pre-biennial urban study Le Grand PuzzleTour de Tous les Possibles is a series of 25 workshops that brings together more than 500 inhabitants from different backgrounds in Marseille: students and prisoners, workers and members of a prestigious swimming club, homeless and real estate agents… A series of unexpected meetings to imagine possible futures for Marseille.

The first two workshops held on the 28th and 29th of Januray were a success. The first one took place at the Baumettes penitentiary centre, where an unprecedented meeting unfolded between young prisoners and students from the KEDGE Business School. The second was held at the ACTA VISTA association, where reintegrated employees met with Endoume residents (Marseille, 7th). Dozens of amazing ideas and projects have already emerged from these workshops.

The Tour de Tous les Possibles project will continue its experimental workshops throughout Marseille, in unusual places, until April 2020.

The commissioned study Le Grand Puzzle explores the different layers of Marseille and its political, cultural and geographical structures. It allows Manifesta to fully understand the complexities and necessities of its host cities while encouraging local citizens to think of new possibilities for their city.

In the splendid Amphithéâtre d’Honneur of Paris Fine arts school, Hedwig Fijen, director of Manifesta and the members of the Artistic Team – Alya Sebti, Marina Otero Verzier, Katerina Chuchalina, Stefan Kalmár- announced last Thursday the High Patronage of Mr Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic and revealed the concept of the biennial along with the first venues in Marseille.

The High Patronage of Mr Emmanuel MACRON, President of the French Republic, recognition confirms the ambition of Manifesta 13 Marseille, its high-quality programme, international calibre and inclusive character.

Following the announcement of the title of Manifesta 13 Marseille Traits d’union.s, on the 29th of June, Hedwig Fijen, director of Manifesta, Jean de Loisy and Marc Bollet, respectively vice-president and secretary of the Manifesta 13 Marseille’s board, and all members of the Manifesta 13 Marseille’s board, Marie-Hélène Feraud-Grégori, City of Marseille councillor for the Opera, the Theatre and the Contemporary art, and the Artistic Team members were happy to reveal the concept of the upcoming biennial as well as a first selection of its venues.

The Artistic Team of Manifesta 13, Alya Sebti, Marina Otero Verzier, Katerina Chuchalina, Stefan Kalmár, will work, among others, closely with, within and across six of Marseille’s most prominent institutions: Musée Cantini, Centre de la Vieille Charité, Musée Grobet-Labadié, Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle, Musée des Beaux- Arts and Conservatoire National à Rayonnement Régional de Marseille. Manifesta 13 Marseille’s participants will infuse these existing institutions with different voices, activating the possibilities that these institutions still hold, by temporarily expanding their narratives outwards and inwards. Museums play an important role within our society in order to bring people together and to help them understand the complexities of the world around us. The current discourse around museums is shifting in order for institutions to become more inclusive, diverse and to create coexistence. The decision to work with a range of venues in Marseille, including many of the leading museums, is amongst others to create stages on which stories will be told, where plots will be unravelled and where new alliances will be formed

Traits d’union.s’ venues are elastic sites within a geography of actions and illusions, promises and premonitions, demands and resolutions: artists, poets, writers, scholars and journalists wield the pen to unveil forgotten, hidden, emergent or just never happened narratives.”

In 2020, Manifesta 13, the European Nomadic Biennial, will take place in Marseille and Region Sud from 7 June 2020 until 1 November 2020. For its first edition in France, Manifesta 13 Marseille will work with an interdisciplinary team of architects, urbanists, artists, and curators, to genuinely integrate a series of artistic projects into the social, cultural, and political fabric of the hosting region and to create a sustainable implementation of Manifesta 13 Marseille.

One of Manifesta 13 Marseille’s main ambitions is to create long-lasting connections and creative collaborations between a local and international network of professionals, cultural producers, associations, and institutions.

Every edition of Manifesta creates a synergy between the main programme of the biennial and so-called “parallel events.” This programme will be called Manifesta 13 Marseille Les Parallèles du Sud. Les Parallèles du Sud aims at highlighting the richness of the artistic and cultural regional scene and strengthening the links between the local ecosystem and international  partners. In 2018 the parallel events of Manifesta 12 Palermo were very successful in terms of visitor numbers and by generating more than 700 press articles.

The projects for Les Parallèles du Sud are selected from an open call by a jury of international and local professionals. Theyare self-organized and self-financed, but benefit from the international outreach and visitors of Manifesta through a dedicated marketing and communication strategy across digital and analogue channels of Manifesta 13 Marseille including the website, guidebook, press conferences, outdoor design, social media features, and printed material.

Region Sud will offer financial support to a number of projects in the Manifesta 13 Marseille Les Parallèles du Sud programme.

Application Guidelines

We are very pleased to open the application procedure for Manifesta 13 Marseille Les Parallèles du Sud.

Who can participate?
The projects can be proposed by local, regional, or international private and public institutions, non-profit organisations, artists, and professionals.
The projects can also be proposed by non-artistic and non-cultural partners so long as the project reflects Manifesta 13 Marseille’s main ambition.

Selection criteria
All projects submitted to the Manifesta 13 Marseille Les Parallèles du Sud should be linked with the main thematic approach of Manifesta 13 Marseille Traits d’union.s which is conceptualised in a time when human and environmental issues are urgent and complex. Specifically, Manifesta 13 Marseille focuses on the following questions:  what do we learn from the plural roots of a city informed by several generations of migration?  What forms of knowledge are born out of this new generation of individuals with complex biographies? How do we create new forms of relationships that can reveal parallels between the local and global context?

The projects should have at least 2 partners, including one regional partner, and should have a clear international dimension (artistic scale, coproduction, part of international networks, etc.) and active collaboration between both partners, reflecting Manifesta 13 Marseille’s ambition to create sustainable networks. The projects should take place in Region Sud and should take place during Manifesta 13 Marseille, from 7 June 2020 until 1 November 2020. Projects do not necessarily have to be on view for the whole duration of the biennial. All proposed projects should be in line with the high-quality standards of Manifesta 13. An interdisciplinary approach of projects will be appreciated. Projects of Manifesta 13 Marseille Les Parallèles du Sud may charge an entry fee. In case of an entry fee, all Manifesta 13 Marseille Pass holders will be granted access to Les Parallèles du Sud at a reduced prize.

Jury
The projects will be evaluated and selected by a dedicated jury, formed by the director of Manifesta, a member of the artistic team Manifesta 13 Marseille, and two local art professionals. The organisers of the selected projects will receive a written confirmation via email by 31 October 2019. The jury will not give reasons for its decision.
All the organisers of the selected projects will be asked to sign a contract stating the artistic, logistic, operational, and financial responsibilities of both partners (Manifesta 13 Marseille and the organisers). The selected projects which have not secured their budget or venues by 1 February 2020 may be withdrawn from the Manifesta 13 Marseille Les Parallèles du Sud programme.

Only regional organisers (based in departments of Region Sud) can apply to Region Sud for financial support.  In their application to the Les Parallèles du Sud programme, applicants should mention the request for a grant to Region Sud in their projected budget. Financial support from Region Sud will be within the range of 4.000 euros to 30.000 euros, and may not exceed more than 30 % of the total budget of the project. Selection by the jury does not guarantee financial support from Region Sud.

On 29 June 2019 at the Conservatoire National à Rayonnement Régional de Marseille, the Manifesta 13 Marseille Artistic Team – Katerina Chuchalina, Stefan Kalmár, Marina Otero Verzier, and Alya Sebti, together with Manifesta director Hedwig Fijen have unveiled the title and first ideas of Manifesta 13 opening on 7 June 2020 and running until 1 November 2020 in Marseille and its region.

Titled Traits d’union.s, Manifesta 13 will bring about new possibilities of telling about, and representing, a city and its region by activating a direct collaboration between its citizens and an international network of professionals. The Manifesta 13 Artistic Team proposes to establish new modes of collaborating among different institutions, associations, and professionals, inviting them to connect, exchange and co-create with the researchers, artists, and architects invited by the Artistic Team as participants. These collaborations will lead to new, site-specific commissions as well as performances and architectural interventions spread through indoor and outdoor venues all around Marseille, and in this way, introduce new forms of being together: Traits d’union.s.

On the occasion of the announcement of the title of the upcoming Manifesta 13 Marseille biennial, the Education Team has released the key mediation concepts and initial projects under the umbrella of Le Tiers Programme. Looking out from the institution, while going along and intertwining with other programmes of the biennial, Le Tiers Programme balances on two pillars: the biennial agenda and that of the Marseillais. Part of the programme derives from the artistic and curatorial dialogue and includes a series of projects accompanying artistic interventions of Manifesta 13 in different neighbourhoods, as well as an extensive mediation programme during the biennial. Another part of the programme traces genealogies of Marseille, challenging the mainstream narratives through peripheral and non-institutional memories.

In this context, the Education and Mediation Team of Manifesta 13 Marseille has also released information on the first projects of Le Tiers Programme. The Invisible Archives is a year-long programme of consecutive exhibitions and public events that activate and re-narrate archives of associations at work around the city of Marseille. The schools’ project, developed by Danish artist Stine Marie Jacobsen together with teachers, students, and local associations, will take the shape of an innovative sports and civic education programme focusing on various forms of solidarity, participation or objection, care, and collaborative skills. The schools’ project is realised in partnership with the Académie d’Aix-Marseille. Please click here to read more about Le Tiers Programme.

The Team of Manifesta 13 Marseille has also introduced the open call for projects to be included in the parallel events programme called Les Parallèles du Sud. As with every edition of Manifesta, Manifesta 13 (7 June 2020 – 1 November 2020) includes parallel events, where local and international professionals and organisations are invited to take part in the biennial alongside the main programme and benefit from Manifesta’s international reach and visitors. The open call will be launched on Manifesta 13 website on 1 July 2019, and the deadline for submission is 25 September 2019. The programme Manifesta 13 Marseille ‘Les Parallèles du Sud’ is supported by the Région Sud Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur (PACA) which can grant financial support to the selected projects. Only regional organisers can apply to Région Sud financial support.

On 29 June 2019, along with the title and key concepts of Manifesta 13 Marseille, the Director of Manifesta and the Manifesta 13 Marseille Artistic Team have also presented the new visual identity of the upcoming biennial. Designed by the Marseille-based studio Super Terrain, the new logo and overall identity of the biennial crystallises the main ambition and crucial intentions of the biennial. Designed by the Marseille-based studio Super Terrain, the new visual identity of Manifesta 13 Marseille plays with a mirrored M, standing for both Manifesta and Marseille, highlighting the fact that both Manifesta and Marseille are looking at each other in an effort to learn from one another. The mirrored M symbol becomes an infinite and identifiable loop.

On Friday, the 1st of February 2019 at L’Alcazar in Marseille, Winy Maas, co-founder of the Dutch architecture and urban design office MVRDV, and director of The Why Factory, the thinktank on the future city at the Technical University in Delft, presented The Grand Puzzle, a 1200-page interdisciplinary pre-biennial research study of Marseille and its metropolitan region. The findings included analyses of the city through interviews and spatial data, and based on this, suggestions for possible urban interventions.

Receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback from the local, national, and international community, the next step is for the study to be contextualized, analyzed, and refined as it becomes a tool for Marseillais to imagine possible futures for their city. The Grand Puzzle will also then serve as an inspirational tool to build on while developing artistic and cultural interventions before and during the biennial which will take place throughout the Marseille region between the 7th of June and the 1st of November 2020. Following the successful introduction of this model in Manifesta 12 Palermo, this is the second time that Manifesta has commissioned an urban study with the purpose of putting the city itself on a stage, fusing various disciplines, and aiming to weave the next stages of Manifesta deeply into the tissues of Marseille society.

The study offers a reflection of the city’s current situation in comparison with other cities. It reveals its specificities, its possibilities, its necessities, and its complexities; forming a “portrait” of the “Grand Puzzle” of Marseille. Deriving from these findings, a number of spatial interventions are suggested, illustrating a path for potential solutions and directions. Ultimately, The Grand Puzzle is a tool for citizens to rethink the potential of their city and its surrounding area. It is structured in 9 chapters with the aim to guide the reader in the discovery of the “Grand Puzzle,” without aspiring to claim a fixed conclusion or single simplistic view of this complex city. The ambition of the study is to highlight the potentialities of the city and its metropole and to put these in a European perspective – finding the themes that echo the critical issues Europe and Marseille face today.

The Grand Puzzle is designed not only to leave a tangible legacy for Marseille but is also intended to create discussion about the future of the city while serving as a basis for the upcoming Manifesta 13 architectural intervention. The forthcoming intervention represents a new model to visualize the ideas of the urban research study into a material form. It will be developed in the next few months and opened this spring as a symbol of unlocking the potential of the city of Marseille in collaboration with – and catering to the needs of – the citizens of the Marseille metropole.

On 3 May 2019, at an official press conference held in Pristina, the Director of Manifesta, Hedwig Fijen, the Mayor of Pristina, Shpend Ahmeti, the Director of Culture City of Pristina, Blerta Bosholli, and the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport of the Republic of Kosovo, Kujtim Gashi; officially announced Pristina as the host city of Manifesta 14.

Since its inception in the early 1990s, the mission of Manifesta is to examine the changing cultural topography of Europe. Every two years, Manifesta looks at the world through the prism of the specific situation of a new host city. The Supervisory Board of Manifesta selected the city of Pristina in Kosovo because of the geographical and geo-political importance of the Balkan in relation to Europe’s recent history and its future. In its relatively young history as the capital of the youngest nation state of Europe, the city of Pristina has experienced major transformations in its landscape by unrestrained neoliberal policies of privatization of open urban spaces. Manifesta aims to support the citizens of Kosovo in their ambition to reclaim public space and to rewrite the future of their city as an open-minded metropolis in the heart of the Balkans.

Pristina presents a unique location from which to look at the past and think about the present challenges Europe is facing from an unexpected and heterogeneous perspectives. This fast-changing urban centre at the crossroads between Southern and Eastern Europe will allow Manifesta 14 to investigate how contemporary culture and social practices can address the identity of a country that is as composite as it is polymorphic.

Pristina was selected by Manifesta to host the 14th edition of the biennial based on the strong bid submitted by the City of Pristina. The Board received bids from various European cities and subsequently undertook in-depth research into each candidate, including research travels, as part of the selection procedure. The selection of the host city three years in advance of the biennial is part of a strategy that enables a greater engagement with the host region and build links between host cities.

At an official press conference in Pristina on 3 May 2019, the Director of Manifesta, Hedwig Fijen; the Mayor of Pristina, Shpend Ahmeti; the Director of Culture City of Pristina, Blerta Bosholli; and the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport of the Republic of Kosovo, Kujtim Gashi; officially announced Pristina as the host city of Manifesta 14.

Shpend Ahmeti, Mayor of the City of Pristina:
Our city is proud and honored to host Manifesta in 2022. In a place where 50 percent of its hospitable population are younger than 25, where Ottoman architecture is mixed with postwar neoliberal philosophy, there is a lot to discuss, there is a lot to do and there is a lot of public space to reclaim. Manifesta is what we need not only to push for an honest discussion about the direction of the city, but also as an example of rebirth of cities, art and architecture in Western Balkans. Manifesta has given the most important answer to our bid – Balkans is Europe and we can contribute to the debate.

Hedwig Fijen, Director of Manifesta:
As the bid proclaimed, Kosovo seems to be going through its own quiet revolution in terms of mobility. An increase in exchange between the new region revitalises historical relationships but also creates surprising connections. This freedom to move within the region has given Kosovars a new way to think about themselves, how they organise their life, and how they experience themselves in relation to the region and the world at large. Besides, Kosovo is not only located within its sovereign territory, but is manifested in a lively diaspora all around the world.
The cultural, legal and political paralysis of the 1990s resulted in a loss of sense of public space and a lack of recognition for what is common. I wish Manifesta can provide Pristina the means to reconstruct, redefine and reclaim a radicalised and diverse public space, which still seems to be today regarded as a cultural subversive act, which can become a call for change.

Manifesta 13 is taking place in Marseille, France in 2020, with an artistic team composed of ifa Gallery Director, Alya Sebti; VAC Foundation Senior Chief Curator, Katerina Chuchalina; Director of Research at Het Nieuwe Instituut, Marina Otero Verzier; and Director of ICA London, Stefan Kalmàr. Manifesta 13 Marseille will be open from 7 June until 1 November 2020 and takes place in various locations throughout the city.

The “Manifesta 13 Marseille Moment” is a workshop organised from November 8-13, 2018, by Winy Maas and The Why Factory, commissioned by Manifesta as part of the pre-biennial research study anticipating the Manifesta 13 edition.

During one week, 80 students and teachers from the Dutch Technical University of Delft, the ENSAM Marseille, and the ESADMM Marseille, were brought together at the J1 Hangar in Marseille to thoroughly investigate the current and future social, cultural, and urbanistic vision of the Metropol of Marseille in all aspects.

The workshop is the first step of the interdisciplinary study on Marseille and its metropolis to be conducted by Dutch architecture and urban agency MVRDV, prior to Manifesta 13 Marseille, the European Nomadic Biennial, to be held in 2020.

During the workshop, the international students produced hundreds of maps of Marseille, illustrated ideas through images and models, and created a collective giant model of the city- imagining a collective future for the city and metropol of Marseille.

Marseille, 25 January 2019

Education and mediation are fundamental values of Manifesta, aiming at implementing the program deep in the tissues of the host city and building sustainable social connections. The Education department started her research in the host city almost two years before the biennial opens to the public. Cultural mapping and extensive research in the neighbourhoods are followed by pilot community program and projects in schools.

Under the title Who are the protagonists of Manifesta 13 in the City of Marseille?” the workshop aimed at mapping educational, cultural and socially-engaged initiatives of the City of Marseille, identifying methodological and infrastructural gaps and needs of local educational and cultural institutions, independent initiatives and social communities.

The participants of the workshop were asked to reflect upon the past experience and current issues of cultural engagement with particular audiences and imagine who and in which way these audience could become protagonists of Manifesta 13 Marseille. Participants took part in five working groups investigating five potential protagonists: Student, Migrant, Activist, Artist and a “fifth” personage to be identified by participants. Each group work presented their findings, followed by plenary discussion moderated by Joana Monbaron, Education Coordinator and Yana Klichuk, Head of Education of Manifesta.

Following the August 2018 appointment by Manifesta 13 of Dutch architect Winy Maas and urban practice MVRDV to conduct the pre-biennial research study for the city of Marseille, a new artistic team has been selected for Manifesta 13 Marseille in 2020 by Director of Manifesta, Hedwig Fijen.

Manifesta 13 Marseille will apply the same innovative approach introduced in Manifesta 12 Palermo, where an in-depth urban study preceded the appointment of 4 trans-disciplinary Creative Mediators who collaborated to genuinely integrate the biennial into the social, cultural, and political fabric of the city of Palermo. This model will now be continued for  Manifesta 13 taking place in 2020 in Marseille with the intention to unlock the city and leave a tangible legacy as was accomplished in Palermo. This is the first time that Manifesta will hold a biennial edition in France. Acutely mirroring the current geo-political challenges both Europe and France are facing, and specifically Marseille as a city of many contradictions, this Mediterranean metropole provides an apt location to hold the European Nomadic Biennial in 2020.

Manifesta is announcing the artistic team of its 13th edition: Moroccan Alya Sebti is today the director of Berlin’s ifa Gallery, has recently been the guest curator of the 13th Dak’Art, Biennial of Contemporary African Art (2018), and was Artistic Director of the 5th Marrakech Biennial; Spanish architect Marina Otero Verzier is the Director of Research and Development at Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam, The Netherlands; Moscow-based, Russian Katerina Chuchalina, is chief curator at the V-A-C Foundation in both Moscow and Venice; German Stefan Kalmár is currently the director of the ICA in London, formerly director of Artists Space New York City, and Kunstverein München, and former resident of Marseille having lived in the city for 12 years.

The appointed artistic team of Manifesta13 reflects this trans-disciplinary and intercultural approach and is the continuation of a model working with a team of both architects, urbanists, curators, and artistic producers covering the knowledge of the Mediterranean region at large as well as the wider spectrum of working in the specific geographical and social political context of Marseille.

Manifesta Director, Hedwig Fijen:

“In continuation of the thematic approach and model of Manifesta 12 in Palermo, we have looked for another southern Mediterranean, historically important central city allowing us to engage with the 21st century urgent global and local issues. This second city of France seems to always be positioned as the ‘outsider’ city characterized by many contradictions, since many citizens consider themselves first Marseillaise and second French. Yet Marseille, with its great port city multiculturalism, and all its complexities and struggles, is for us maybe the ultimate test of how Marseille, France and Europe are facing the most important conflicts of our time. The appointed artistic team has our confidence to create a critical response to the current state of affairs in Europe and an artistic vision how we can look at global issues through the spectrum of Marseille.”

MVRDV, after having worked closely with students from the National Higher School of Architecture (ENSA), the National Higher School of Arts and Design of Marseille, and The Why Factory, a research institute for the future city, founded by Winy Maas in 2008 at TU Delft, will close its pre-biennial urban study in the beginning of 2019. An architectural intervention in public space of the city of Marseille will be presented in spring of the same year.

Manifesta 13 Marseille will take place between 7 June and 1 November 2020.

Katerina Chuchalina has been a chief curator at the V-A-C Foundation (Moscow and Venice) since 2011. Chuchalina conceived and curated the long-term cycle of nomadic artistic interventions and public programs in Moscow non-art institutions (Museum of Armed Forces, the Museum of Modern History, Institute for African Studies, GULAG museum etc.). She curated a series of exhibitions investigating architecture-related issues by means of contemporary art, which have included the international group shows IK-00. The Spaces of Confinement (Venice, 2014), and The Way of Enthusiasts (Venice, 2014). Stefan Kalmár has been the director of the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London since 2017, where he has been widely credited with reasserting the ICA’s radical and progressive founding spirit with exhibitions by Seth Price, Forensic Architecture, Julie Becker and Metahaven and by reintroducing theatre, performance and truly independent cinema to the programme. Prior to this, Kalmár was director of Artists Space, New York, between 2009 and 2016. Notable exhibitions staged during his directorship include Danh Vō (2010), Charlotte Posenenske (2010), Bernadette Corporation (2012), Hito Steyerl (2015) and Cameron Rowland (2016). With exhibitions such as Decolonize This Place, or historic surveys on the work of Christopher D’Archangolo, Charlotte Posenenske or Tom of Finland The Pleasure of Play, Kalmár demonstrates a deep commitment to historical and contemporary artists working in their most radical forms, a curatorial work that results in often longstanding and deep relationships with artists, and audiences alike.

Manifesta is the European Nomadic Biennial, which originated in the early 1990s in response to the political, economic, and social change following the end of the Cold War and the subsequent steps towards European integration. Manifesta has developed into a platform for dialogue between art and society by inviting the cultural and artistic community to produce new creative experiences with, and for, the context in which it takes place. Manifesta rethinks the relations between culture and society investigating and catalysing positive social change in Europe through contemporary culture in a continuous dialogue with the social sphere of a specific place.

Manifesta was founded Dutch art historian, Hedwig Fijen. Each new edition is fundraised individually and managed by a permanent team of international specialists. Manifesta is working from its offices in Amsterdam and Marseille.

For its thirteenth edition, Manifesta takes place for the first time in France in Marseille in 2020. There could be no better city than Marseille to further expand Manifesta’s research and discussion about the challenges Europe is facing today. Manifesta 13 Marseille proposes to work with existing cultural institutions and associations, both symbolically and practically, by introducing different voices while expanding their narratives. With this ambition, Manifesta 13 Marseille will unfold through site-specific artistic commissions, performances, and urban interventions to imagine new forms of being together: Traits d’union.s.
