Western lyricism and African psalmody meet, where the feminine merges with the masculine as in the unpublished song of Jan Meyerowitz, the composer saved by Varian Fry. The piece is based on a poem by René Char written during his hiding in the occupied zone. This song will be the source of our creation, In Memoriam, for soprano, Senegalese Mouride singer, reciter, piano, keyboard and percussion, on the unpublished text by Stéphane Hessel on his friend and fellowcombatant, Varian Fry: “Then Varian Fry came, carrying the only hope that had brought us all together in Marseille: that of escaping…”
